5 Other diseases you can get from mosquitoes

Malaria is a deadly disease. Everyone knows this. And everyone is also aware of the role of mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria.


The world has spent decades and billions in battling malaria. But malaria isn’t the only disease in the arsenal of mosquitoes. Remember the recent outbreak of Zika virus? If you think Zika virus and Malaria are bad, you clearly haven’t heard of the following diseases:

1.  Chikungunya
This disease is caused by the Asian Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the Yellow Fever mosquito ( Aedes aegypti). Symptoms include joint pain, rashes, head and back aches and vomiting. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease.

2.  Yellow Fever
This disease is caused by the Aedes aegypti. It is prevalent in the tropical regions of the world. People who have yellow fever usually experience fevers, headaches and nausea.

3.  Dengue Fever
Another deadly disease transmitted by the mosquito designed to punish humans for being so big. The Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes are the culprits. This disease is common in Africa, the Carribean, South America etc.

4.  West Nile Fever
The Culex mosquito is the carrier of the virus that causes this disease. It affects mainly animals. But it has been found to affect humans too. In severe cases, this disease can lead to convulsions and death.

5.  Rift Valley Fever
This disease is commonly found among people who live with domesticated animals like goats, sheep etc. The Aedes and Culex mosquitoes are the vectors of this disease. Fever, back pain and weakness are symptoms of this disease. Severe cases can lead to death.
